What Is a Glue Tab?

A glue tab is the narrow strip of corrugated board on one edge of a box blank that overlaps and is adhesive-bonded to the opposite edge to form the manufacturer’s joint. This joint converts the flat blank into a tube shape that can then be folded into a finished box. The glue tab is a fundamental structural element of virtually every corrugated box, from a standard RSC to complex die-cut designs.

Types of Glue Tabs

There are four primary glue tab configurations, each suited to different applications:

• Standard Glue Tab: The tab extends from the body panel only, not into the flap area. This is the most common and economical configuration, suitable for the majority of shipping and storage applications.
• Partial Extended Glue Tab: The tab extends partially into the flap area, providing a wider glue surface for stronger joints. Used when boxes carry heavier loads or require greater joint integrity.
• Full Extended Glue Tab: The tab extends the full height of the blank, including both flap areas. This provides maximum joint strength and is specified for heavy-duty applications and boxes that must withstand rough handling.
• Outside Glue Tab: The tab is folded to the outside of the box rather than the inside. This creates a smooth interior surface, which is important for food packaging and applications where interior obstructions could damage the product.

Choosing the Right Glue Tab

The choice of glue tab type depends on box weight capacity, packing line requirements, and product sensitivity. Standard glue tabs handle most general shipping needs. Extended tabs are specified when the manufacturer’s joint must withstand higher stresses — for example, on boxes packed by machine or loaded with heavy contents. Outside glue tabs are preferred in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications where a clean interior is essential.

Your packaging engineer will specify the glue tab type as part of the overall box design, considering factors like board grade, inside dimensions, and the forces the joint will experience during filling, sealing, and transit.
