What Is a Box Manufacturer’s Certificate?

The Box Manufacturer’s Certificate (BMC) is a printed stamp found on one of the bottom flaps of a corrugated box. It serves as the manufacturer’s certification that the box meets specific construction and performance standards. Sometimes referred to as the certificate stamp or “cert,” the BMC provides critical information that freight carriers, warehouse operators, and buyers use to verify packaging quality.

The BMC stamp is required by carrier classification rules and is the industry’s standard way of communicating a box’s capabilities. It tells anyone handling the box what it is rated to carry and how it was tested, without needing to reference a separate spec sheet.

What Information Does the BMC Contain?

A standard BMC stamp includes several key data points. The board construction indicates whether the box is single-wall, double-wall, or triple-wall. The strength rating shows either the ECT (Edge Crush Test) value in pounds per linear inch or the Mullen Burst Test value in pounds per square inch. The size limit defines the maximum combined length, width, and height of the box, while the weight limit specifies the maximum gross weight the box can contain.

The stamp also identifies the box manufacturer by name or symbol and may include the city of manufacture. This information establishes accountability and traceability within the supply chain.

Freight carriers rely on the BMC to determine whether a box is suitable for the goods it contains and the conditions it will face during transit. A box shipped with contents exceeding its certified weight limit may be rejected by the carrier or result in denied damage claims.
