What Is a Header Card?

A header card is a printed panel that sits at the top of a retail display, serving as the primary visual communication element for brand identity, product messaging, and promotional offers. Positioned above the product, the header card is the first thing shoppers see when approaching a display — making it one of the most important design elements in any POP display program.

Header cards are used on virtually every type of corrugated display, including floor stands, sidekick displays, countertop displays, and dump bins. They can be integrated into the display structure or attached as a separate component, depending on the display design and shipping requirements.

The Role of the Header Card in Retail

In a retail environment crowded with competing products and promotions, the header card is a display’s billboard. It must communicate the essential message — brand name, product benefit, or promotional offer — within the few seconds a shopper spends glancing at it. Effective header cards use bold typography, high-contrast color combinations, and clean visual hierarchy to deliver their message instantly.

Because the header card sits above the product, it is visible over the heads of other shoppers and above adjacent shelf fixtures. This elevated position extends the display’s visual reach, attracting attention from farther distances than the product-level portions of the display can achieve.

Designing an effective header card requires disciplined prioritization of messaging. The most common mistake is overcrowding the header with too much text or too many visual elements. Successful header cards follow a clear hierarchy:

• Brand logo — immediately identifiable, typically at the top
• Primary message — the single most important point (product name, promotional offer, or call to action)
• Supporting imagery — product photography or lifestyle imagery that reinforces the message
• Die-cut shapes — custom contours that break the rectangular norm and increase visual interest
