Displays That Merchandise Themselves
Artisan Display & Packaging engineers gravity feed displays with angled shelves that automatically push products forward as shoppers make their selections.
What Is a Gravity Feed Display?
A gravity feed display is a retail merchandising fixture that uses angled or inclined shelves to harness gravity, automatically advancing products toward the front of the display as items are removed by shoppers. This self-facing mechanism ensures that the display always appears fully stocked and neatly organized, even as inventory is depleted throughout the day.
Gravity feed displays are used in a wide range of POP display formats, including floor stands, countertop displays, sidekick displays, and POS checkout units. They are particularly effective for products with consistent packaging dimensions, such as boxed goods, bagged snacks, bottled beverages, and carded items.
How Gravity Feed Works
The principle behind gravity feed is straightforward: shelves are angled so that the back of the shelf is higher than the front, creating a gentle slope. Products are loaded from the back and slide forward under their own weight. When a customer removes the front item, the next product in line advances to fill the gap. A front lip or stop prevents products from sliding off the shelf entirely.
The angle of the shelf, the friction characteristics of the product packaging, and the weight of the individual items all factor into the engineering of a reliable gravity feed system. Too steep an angle may cause products to jam or tumble, while too shallow an angle may not generate enough force to advance the product. Precision scoring ensures each shelf is folded to the exact angle required.
Benefits for Brands and Retailers
Gravity feed displays deliver two primary benefits. For brands, the display always presents a fully faced, organized appearance — reinforcing product quality and brand professionalism. Empty gaps and disorganized shelves undermine consumer confidence and reduce purchase likelihood. Gravity feed eliminates these problems mechanically.
For retailers, gravity feed reduces the labor required to maintain display appearance. Store associates do not need to constantly push products forward or reorganize shelves — the display does this work automatically. This labor savings is especially valuable in high-volume retail environments where staff time is at a premium.
Design and Manufacturing
Our Artisan Display & Packaging team designs gravity feed displays using corrugated board with precisely calibrated shelf angles. Each display is prototyped and tested with the actual product to verify smooth, reliable feeding before production begins. Die-cutting creates the shelf shapes and locking mechanisms, while litho-lamination or flexographic printing delivers the brand graphics.
For retail programs requiring pre-loaded displays, our Tech-Pak division handles pack-out — filling each gravity feed lane with product and preparing the display for just-in-time delivery to stores.
Frequently Asked Questions
What products work best with gravity feed displays?
Products with uniform, rigid packaging that slides easily work best — boxed items, carded products, bottled beverages, and flat-bagged snacks are all strong candidates. Very lightweight or irregularly shaped products may require additional engineering to feed reliably.
Can gravity feed displays be made from corrugated board?
Yes. Corrugated board is one of the most common materials for gravity feed displays. Properly engineered corrugated shelves provide sufficient structural support and the smooth surface needed for reliable product feeding. Coatings can be applied to adjust friction as needed.
How many product facings can a gravity feed display hold?
The number of facings depends on the display dimensions and product size. A typical floor stand gravity feed display can hold four to eight product lanes across multiple tiers, while a countertop version may feature two to four lanes. Custom configurations are designed to match your specific requirements.
