What Is E-Flute?

E-flute is a fine corrugated board profile with a flute height of approximately 1.5 millimeters (1/16 of an inch) and a density of 90 to 95 flutes per foot. It is one of the thinnest standard corrugated flute sizes, sitting below B-flute and C-flute in the thickness hierarchy. Despite its thin profile, E-flute provides meaningful crush resistance and stacking strength — enough to protect a wide range of consumer products during shipping and retail display.

What makes E-flute stand out from thicker flute profiles is its printing surface. The closely spaced flutes create an exceptionally smooth, flat liner face that supports high-resolution printing with fine detail, sharp text, and vibrant color. This is why E-flute has become the board of choice for retail-ready packaging, point-of-purchase displays, and any application where graphic quality is a priority.

E-flute effectively bridges the gap between solid paperboard (folding cartons) and traditional corrugated board. It offers the structural benefits of a corrugated fluted medium — cushioning, rigidity, and stackability — while approaching the print quality associated with solid board. For many brands, switching from folding carton to E-flute corrugated reduces material cost while maintaining shelf presence.

E-Flute Specifications and Performance

Understanding the technical characteristics of E-flute helps in selecting the right board for your application:

  • Flute height: Approximately 1.5 mm (0.06 inches)
  • Flutes per foot: 90 to 95
  • Board caliper: Typically 1.5 to 1.8 mm depending on liner weights
  • Flat crush resistance: Good for its thickness, due to the high flute count per foot
  • Printability: Excellent — the smooth surface supports both flexographic and digital printing with high ink coverage
  • Scoring and folding: Clean, tight folds with minimal spring-back, ideal for complex die-cut structures

The high flute density gives E-flute a favorable strength-to-weight ratio. Each flute column acts as a tiny structural support, and having more columns per foot distributes loads more evenly across the board surface. This makes E-flute surprisingly robust for its thin profile.

Common Applications for E-Flute Packaging

E-flute is used wherever packaging needs to look great on a shelf or display while still providing enough protection during shipping and handling. Key applications include:

  • Retail-ready packaging (RRP): Shelf-ready trays and boxes that go directly from pallet to store shelf, printed with full-color branding.
  • Point-of-purchase displays: Counter displays, end-cap units, and floor stands produced by PIP display specialists that demand both structural integrity and visual impact.
  • Cosmetics and personal care: Gift sets, kits, and presentation boxes that require a premium unboxing experience.
  • Food and beverage: Pizza boxes, bakery containers, produce trays, and snack packaging where food-safe materials and printability are both essential.
  • E-commerce mailers: Lightweight, custom-fit shipping boxes that reduce dimensional weight charges and present well at the doorstep.
  • Electronics packaging: Inner boxes and inserts for consumer electronics that need a clean, printed appearance plus cushioning.

E-Flute vs. Other Corrugated Flute Types

Choosing the right flute profile depends on balancing protection, print quality, and cost. Here is how E-flute compares to other common profiles:

E-Flute vs. B-Flute

B-flute is approximately 2.5 mm thick with about 47 flutes per foot. It provides more cushioning and stacking strength than E-flute but has a slightly rougher printing surface. B-flute is often chosen for die-cut shipping boxes and inner packaging where strength matters more than graphic quality.

E-Flute vs. C-Flute

C-flute is the most common corrugated profile at roughly 4 mm thick. It offers significantly more stacking strength and cushioning than E-flute but is too thick and coarse for high-quality printing. C-flute is the standard for shipping containers and cases.

E-Flute vs. Folding Carton (Solid Board)

Folding cartons are made from solid paperboard without a fluted medium. They print beautifully but lack the cushioning and rigidity of corrugated board. E-flute offers a cost-effective middle ground — nearly matching folding carton print quality while delivering better protection and often at lower material cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E-flute strong enough for shipping?

E-flute is suitable for shipping lightweight to moderate-weight products, especially when the box design is well-engineered. For heavier items or long supply chains with rough handling, a thicker flute like B or C — or a double-wall combination — may be more appropriate. Your packaging supplier can recommend the right board based on your product weight and distribution requirements.

Can E-flute be printed with full-color graphics?

Yes, and this is one of E-flute’s primary advantages. The smooth, dense surface supports high-resolution flexographic and digital printing with excellent color reproduction. E-flute handles high ink coverage well, making it ideal for retail packaging that needs to compete visually on the shelf.

Is E-flute recyclable?

Absolutely. E-flute is made from the same corrugated materials as other flute types and is fully recyclable through standard corrugated recycling streams. It is also available with recycled content. Learn more about our commitment to sustainable packaging.
