What Is Corrugated Fiberboard?

Corrugated fiberboard is the engineered paper-based material used to manufacture the vast majority of shipping boxes, retail packaging, and protective containers in the world. Its structure consists of one or more layers of fluted corrugating medium sandwiched between flat linerboard sheets, bonded together with starch-based adhesive.

This deceptively simple construction produces a material with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. The arched shape of the flutes acts like a series of connected columns, resisting compression from above while the flat linerboard provides a smooth, printable surface and distributes loads evenly.

How Corrugated Fiberboard Is Made

The manufacturing process begins on a corrugator — a machine that can be over 300 feet long. Rolls of medium are fed through heated, interlocking corrugating rolls that form the paper into a wave pattern. The flute tips are coated with adhesive, and linerboard is pressed against them under heat and pressure to form a permanent bond.

The resulting material can be produced in different configurations: single face (one liner and one fluted medium), single wall (fluted medium between two liners), double wall (two fluted mediums between three liners), or triple wall (three fluted mediums between four liners).

Why Corrugated Fiberboard Dominates Packaging

Corrugated fiberboard accounts for the majority of all packaging materials shipped worldwide, and for good reason. Its advantages include:

  • Customizable strength: By varying board grade, basis weight, and flute profile, engineers can design packaging for products ranging from delicate electronics to thousand-pound machinery.
  • Printability: Linerboard accepts high-quality flexographic and digital printing for branding and product information.
  • Sustainability: Corrugated is one of the most recycled materials on earth, with recovery rates exceeding 90 percent in the United States.
  • Cost efficiency: Compared to wood, plastic, or metal packaging, corrugated offers superior protection per dollar.
  • Lightweight: Reduces shipping costs compared to heavier alternatives.

Corrugated vs. Cardboard: Understanding the Difference

While many people use the term “cardboard” colloquially, corrugated fiberboard is a distinctly different material from solid cardboard (also called paperboard). The key difference is the fluted medium layer — corrugated fiberboard always contains at least one layer of fluted paper, which gives it dramatically superior strength and cushioning compared to flat paperboard.

Applications Across Industries

At President Container, we manufacture corrugated fiberboard packaging for virtually every industry — food and beverage, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, industrial manufacturing, and consumer products. Our sister division, Artisan Display, uses corrugated fiberboard to create eye-catching point-of-purchase displays, while President Industrial Products stocks a full range of corrugated supplies for immediate shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is corrugated fiberboard recyclable?

Yes. Corrugated fiberboard is one of the most recyclable materials available. The paper fibers can be recycled multiple times into new recycled linerboard and medium. President Container Group recycles 100 percent of its manufacturing waste.

What is the difference between single wall and double wall corrugated?

Single wall has one fluted medium between two linerboards. Double wall adds a second fluted medium and a third linerboard, significantly increasing strength and cushioning for heavier or more fragile products.

How thick is corrugated fiberboard?

Thickness (caliper) depends on the flute profile. Single wall board ranges from about 0.8 mm (F-flute) to 4.8 mm (A-flute). Double wall typically measures 5 to 7 mm, and triple wall can exceed 15 mm.
