Looking for a Firm, Printable Corrugated Board?
President Container Group manufactures B-flute corrugated packaging that combines excellent flat crush resistance with a smooth surface ideal for high-quality graphics.
What Is B-Flute?
B-flute is a mid-range flute profile measuring approximately 2.5 mm in height with 47 to 50 flutes per linear foot. It was the second flute profile developed for corrugated fiberboard — hence the “B” designation — and has become one of the most versatile options in modern packaging.
With its shorter, more closely spaced flutes compared to A-flute or C-flute, B-flute creates a firmer, more rigid board that resists flat crush exceptionally well. The denser flute pattern also produces a smoother linerboard surface, making it an excellent choice for packaging that requires quality printed graphics.
B-Flute Specifications
- Flute height: Approximately 2.5 mm (98 mils)
- Flutes per foot: 47–50
- Caliper (single wall): Approximately 3 mm including linerboard
- Take-up factor: Approximately 1.35:1
Key Performance Characteristics
B-flute occupies a distinctive position among flute profiles. Its performance advantages include:
- Superior flat crush resistance: The closely spaced flutes resist being crushed flat under uniform pressure better than taller, more widely spaced profiles. This is critical for products like canned goods and heavy items that press against the board surface.
- Smooth print surface: More flutes per foot means less distance between flute tips supporting the linerboard, reducing the washboard effect and improving print definition.
- Space efficiency: At 2.5 mm, B-flute boxes take up less storage and shipping space than C-flute or A-flute, reducing warehousing costs and fitting more product per pallet.
- Clean die-cutting: The thinner profile cuts cleanly with sharp edges, making B-flute excellent for complex die-cut shapes and retail-ready packaging.
Common Applications for B-Flute
B-flute is commonly specified for:
- Canned goods and beverage packaging
- Die-cut retail packaging and shelf-ready trays
- Point-of-purchase displays requiring structural strength
- Internal packaging components like partitions and dividers
- Products where flat crush resistance is more important than cushioning
- E-commerce packaging where space efficiency matters
B-Flute Compared to Other Profiles
Compared to C-flute, B-flute is thinner and provides less cushioning but better flat crush resistance and print quality. Compared to E-flute, B-flute is thicker and stronger for shipping applications but does not print quite as smoothly. This makes B-flute an excellent middle-ground for packaging that must both ship well and look good.
B-flute is also a popular component in double wall constructions. BC-flute (B + C) delivers heavy-duty shipping performance, while EB-flute (E + B) combines a printable outer surface with B-flute’s structural strength.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is B-flute strong enough for shipping?
Yes. B-flute is widely used for shipping boxes, particularly for products like canned goods, bottled beverages, and consumer electronics. Its flat crush resistance is actually superior to larger flute profiles, though it provides less cushioning than A-flute or C-flute.
Why is B-flute used for canned goods?
Canned goods are heavy and press directly against the board surface. B-flute’s superior flat crush resistance prevents the board from collapsing under this pressure, while its thinner profile saves material and storage space for high-volume products.
Can I print high-quality graphics on B-flute?
Yes. B-flute produces a smoother print surface than A-flute or C-flute because its flutes are more closely spaced. For the very highest print quality, E-flute or F-flute may be preferred, but B-flute delivers excellent results for most commercial printing needs.
