What Is B-Flute?

B-flute is a mid-range flute profile measuring approximately 2.5 mm in height with 47 to 50 flutes per linear foot. It was the second flute profile developed for corrugated fiberboard — hence the “B” designation — and has become one of the most versatile options in modern packaging.

With its shorter, more closely spaced flutes compared to A-flute or C-flute, B-flute creates a firmer, more rigid board that resists flat crush exceptionally well. The denser flute pattern also produces a smoother linerboard surface, making it an excellent choice for packaging that requires quality printed graphics.

Key Performance Characteristics

B-flute occupies a distinctive position among flute profiles. Its performance advantages include:

• Superior flat crush resistance: The closely spaced flutes resist being crushed flat under uniform pressure better than taller, more widely spaced profiles. This is critical for products like canned goods and heavy items that press against the board surface.
• Smooth print surface: More flutes per foot means less distance between flute tips supporting the linerboard, reducing the washboard effect and improving print definition.
• Space efficiency: At 2.5 mm, B-flute boxes take up less storage and shipping space than C-flute or A-flute, reducing warehousing costs and fitting more product per pallet.
• Clean die-cutting: The thinner profile cuts cleanly with sharp edges, making B-flute excellent for complex die-cut shapes and retail-ready packaging.

B-Flute Compared to Other Profiles

Compared to C-flute, B-flute is thinner and provides less cushioning but better flat crush resistance and print quality. Compared to E-flute, B-flute is thicker and stronger for shipping applications but does not print quite as smoothly. This makes B-flute an excellent middle-ground for packaging that must both ship well and look good.

B-flute is also a popular component in double wall constructions. BC-flute (B + C) delivers heavy-duty shipping performance, while EB-flute (E + B) combines a printable outer surface with B-flute’s structural strength.
