What Is A-Flute?

A-flute is the largest standard flute profile used in corrugated fiberboard, measuring approximately 4.0 to 4.8 mm in height with 32 to 37 flutes per linear foot. Originally the first flute profile developed for corrugated packaging — hence the “A” designation — it remains the go-to choice when maximum cushioning and compression strength are required.

The tall, widely spaced arches of A-flute create large air cells within the board structure. These air cells are what give A-flute its exceptional ability to absorb shocks and vibrations, protecting fragile products from the impacts of shipping and handling.

A-Flute Specifications

  • Flute height: 4.0–4.8 mm (approximately 157–189 mils)
  • Flutes per foot: 32–37
  • Caliper (single wall): Approximately 5 mm including linerboard
  • Take-up factor: Approximately 1.5:1 (uses about 50% more medium paper per square foot than the flat sheet area)

Performance Advantages

A-flute delivers the best cushioning performance of any single flute profile. Its strengths include:

  • Excellent cushioning: The tall flute height creates deep air cells that absorb shock energy effectively, providing superior protection for fragile goods.
  • High compression strength: The tall arches resist top-to-bottom loads exceptionally well, delivering strong stacking performance for palletized storage.
  • Good insulation: The larger air volume provides greater thermal insulation compared to smaller flute profiles.

These advantages make A-flute the preferred choice for products that are fragile, heavy, or both — situations where the thicker board profile is justified by the protection it provides.

When to Choose A-Flute

A-flute is commonly specified for:

  • Glassware, ceramics, and other breakable items
  • Electronic components sensitive to vibration
  • Heavy industrial parts that also require cushioning
  • Products requiring maximum stacking strength
  • Single face wrapping material for high-cushioning applications

However, A-flute’s thickness means it consumes more warehouse space and more paper per box than thinner profiles. For applications where cushioning is less critical, C-flute or B-flute may provide sufficient protection with greater material efficiency.

A-Flute Compared to Other Profiles

While A-flute offers the best cushioning, C-flute has become more popular for general shipping because it provides a strong balance of cushioning and efficiency at a slightly thinner profile. For retail applications, finer flutes like E-flute and F-flute deliver superior print quality. A-flute can also be combined with other profiles in double wall constructions for applications requiring both extreme cushioning and print quality.

The packaging engineers at President Container evaluate your product’s specific needs — weight, fragility, supply chain conditions, and budget — to recommend the ideal flute profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is A-flute the strongest corrugated board?

A-flute provides the highest cushioning and excellent compression strength among single-flute profiles. However, “strongest” depends on what you are measuring. B-flute offers better flat crush resistance, and double wall or triple wall constructions exceed any single wall profile in overall load capacity.

Why isn’t A-flute used for all corrugated boxes?

A-flute’s greater thickness uses more material and takes up more storage space than thinner profiles. For many products, C-flute or B-flute provides sufficient protection at lower cost. A-flute is reserved for applications where maximum cushioning and compression strength are truly needed.

Can A-flute be used in retail packaging?

A-flute is generally too thick for retail shelf packaging and its surface produces more visible washboard effect when printed. For retail applications, E-flute or F-flute deliver better print quality in a thinner format. A-flute is best suited for shipping and protective applications.
